What a terrific Tyee season 2011 turned out to be !

Why do they call them "Floater Suits"?
2012 .... The Coming Season...
Looking back on our summer it is hard to pinpoint a highlight, there were just too many! Could it be Doug Price "KingFish" who has a hat full of Tyee Pins coming in with a 51 lb Chinook Aug 3 only to be topped by ½ a pound 3 weeks later by Karsten Windeler at 51.5 ! Or our old friend and Chef "Papa Bear" returning as a guest with Mama Bear who now is in Ole's Tyee Club! Maybe it might be Darold and Linda Brown, landing his and her Tyee on their first trip. How about some of our long time guests joining the Tyee Club like Brian Campbell (third year in a row), John Melby, Rocky Booth, Todd Greene, Jeff Morgan, Domingo Viyella Jr., Mario de Ferrari, Doug Bosko and Jane Ewashko to name a few. The novices proved that beginners luck is still the best kind, just ask Penny Wassem, Derek Glen Angel, Francisco Geraldes, Brett Oswood or Stacy Hauser for example. With all the Tyee pins handed out I will need to reorder sooner than expected. A real quality problem!

Looking for more interesting ways to experience Hakai Pass? Our crew is never short of intriguing ideas. This year our own Hilary decided it might be fun and challenging to try to catch a salmon from a Kayak. Having lots of experience behind the paddle it took it to a whole new level when there is a feisty Coho jumping on the line. It takes a special set of skills to be able to boat a Coho, without a net, sitting in a Kayak! Well as you can see she not only did it, she stayed out and caught a second salmon, take a look!

One of the topics that tops our most frequently asked questions list is how do we shut down the lodge, how long does it take, where do the boats and docks go? In an effort to answer some of these questions we have put together a short slide show from our 2011 seasons end. Shutting down the camp usually takes 3-4 days, depending on the weather and Murphys Law. Taking inventory and storing items for the winter is a huge undertaking. Everything must be cleaned and dried before careful packing. Our docks, along with the boats loaded on top are towed down to Sunshine Bay (a protected harbor about 40 miles south east on the mainland side) by a small tug. The Lodge is towed down to Campbell River by another tug and spends the winter in a freshwater marina. This tow takes about 36-38 hours down about 200 miles of the picturesque inside passage. Check out this brief slideshow in Windows Movie format or visit our Close and Tow 2011 Photo Album to get a feel for the process.

Never a dull moment in Hakai Pass, be sure to bring along your camera, memory cards and chargers because as you can see there is always something going on in Hakai Pass that may take your breath away.

We take your safety seriously here at Ole's. During your stay we provide each guest with PFD Floater Suits to wear while in the boats. But we don't stop there, we want to be sure that if needed, they will perform the required function. The only way to be certain is to test them and our crew are always willing to go that extra mile. I didn't have to ask twice for volunteers, the crew was more than willing to don the suits and jump in the water to check them out. As you can see from the pictures Gillian, Jesse and Hilary had great results and also a lot of fun on a hot sunny day! Fortunately most guests will never need to experience the floater suit in action but at least we know in the unlikely event they are needed they work!

While I am in Hakai Pass enjoying all it has to offer in the summer with our guests, Tammy is keeping the home fires burning, so to speak. We started keeping bees with our neighbors last year and this fall before I got home Tammy and Kelli (our neighbor and bee buddy), had successfully harvested 50 lbs. of Honey from our hives. Our local honey is primarily from black berry blossoms and is a rich dark colour with a pleasing complex flavor, not too sweet, just right! Beekeeping is a great hobby with not only sweet benefits, but also the bees provide the all-important pollination of fruit, trees and flowers in our surrounding area.

We installed Web & Weather Cams so that guests and their families and friends can watch the action on our docks and view the weather at the entrance to our secluded bay... our web link will be active throughout our operating season.
We've also updated our web site adding a Fishing Blog and updating our Hakai Review News . If you haven't visited our news stories for the season do visit our Blog and Hakai Review and see what interesting creatures were caught during our 2011 season!
Ole's has also added Fishing School videos to our web site for those who want to bone up on tips and techniques before arriving at the lodge for their fishing trips.
